Mansfield – A Mansfield ISD student was arrested after a gun was found in their backpack on their backpack on Friday morning, employees said.
Legacy High School Director Stephanie Bono informs parents of email about the incident related to a student carrying a firearm on the campus.
“The safety of your student is a major priority and it is important to keep our families aware of what is happening in our campus,” the emails said.
During the morning arrival, Evolv weapons detection system Alerts weapons staff in the student’s backpack. The system is a security screening technology powered by AI, which scans individuals for hidden weapons using sensors and machine learning, which allows the detection of a threat of high bandwidths.
The administrator who runs the screening process searched the backpack and found a loaded firearm, Bono said.
Mansfield ISD police have arrested the student and removed them from the campus, the email said. The student will encounter disciplinary actions under the MISD Code of Conduct.
The email confirmed any indication of a specific threat against a student or staff member.
“We are grateful that our students and employees are safe and that the training and equipment we have invested as an area have worked,” a statement from CBS News Texas said.
AI in the schools in North Texas
The Mansfield ISD began using the Evolv Express Metal detector system, which uses artificial intelligence to detect properties found in weapons in 2023.
The system costs approximately $ 800,000 a year for 20 units.
“It takes a lot of time with metal detectors, a lot of labor to look for all the metal that is human,” Britney Fortner told CBS News Texas. “He is looking for these specific concerns and identifies the location of the place where we have to look, so students can continue to pass if they have nothing anxiety about them.”
