Western Virginia (WCHS) – West Virginia governor announced on Thursday that he had issued an enforcement order directing law enforcement authorities throughout the country to cooperate with federal officers in addressing illegal immigration issues.
Governor Patrick Morrisi said during a message on Thursday that he also sent letters to the law enforcement agencies throughout the country, urging them to follow the enforcement order, as well as the executive order of President Donald Trump, in the work of immigration and the application of the customs US conditions.
“In Western Virginia, a much more illegal immigration problem is happening than anyone has known before,” Morrisi said.
The governor has linked national immigration problems to some of the country’s drug problems, more specifically fentanyl, and vowed to work with federal leaders to help limit it.
“I want to do my best to protect the Western Virginians from the deadly drug epidemic and part of this is to work with President Trump to deal with illegal immigration problems and challenges for our country,” he said.
In a country with 1.7 million people, the governor said there were 72 people detained in Western Virginia by Wednesday night, but 10 have been moved to Kentucky since then. Morrisi said of the detainees, 13 are currently serving convictions for crimes committed in West Virginia.
“What we have learned is that a number of these people have violated the court orders,” the governor said. “For example, you may be the object of hearing an immigration judge. Be someone who has been deported.
Currently, detainees are being held in several facilities throughout the country, including Salem, St. Merris, Stevens, Huttonville and Federal Correctional Facilities of Massive Oil. The detainees are also held in the regional prisons of the state, including the Central Regional, Eastern Regional, South Central, North Central, Southern Regional and Northern Regional.
The governor does not detail how much they are detained in each facility.
The Morrisi administration plans to hold a meeting next week to discuss further actions on immigration.
