BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond has announced his retirement from the Birmingham Police Department.
Thurmond’s last day will be Friday, November 29.
Birmingham Mayor Woodfin says the interim leader will be Deputy Chief Michael Pickett.
Woodfin says Pickett played an important role in Operation Night Rider and the World Games.
Pickett attended Ramsey High School and Miles College.
Thurmond turns 50 this year and says he has spent 26 years with BPD. He says he’ll have to see what opportunities come up next.
Thurmond says he decided that four or five months ago and nothing with leadership or recent events has influenced his decision.
