Aidaho researchers emphasize the cooling force of the trees in the hot -hot neighborhoods of Boyz – Idaho News

A group of young researchers from the Idaho Conservation Corps is looking at Boyz’s hottest days. They emphasize the critical role that vegetation plays in mitigating extreme urban heat.

Researchers used advanced sensory technology and conducted ground studies to measure how different surfaces, such as grass, trees and flooring, affect temperatures. Their discoveries revealed a peak temperature of 105 degrees above asphalt, while areas with mature trees and vegetation were more cool than 30 to 40 degrees. The Bora Park was the most cool spot.

Some of the hottest areas included West Franklin Road and the big parking lot in Borah High School. Researchers recommend planting more trees while maintaining open green spaces and designing buildings to improve the airflow to keep the neighborhoods cool.

Mayor Lauren McLean praised the study as insightful, saying that the city is flourishing when neighbors work together to make a choice to help keep the city cool. Officials added that this survey would inform future urban planning and environmental strategies.
