I must respectfully call out the gross mischaracterization of Proposition 140 in the letter in the Oct. 24 edition of the Daily Independent, the jungle primary, ranked-choice voting has no place in Arizona elections.
The author incorrectly confuses readers by implying that the initiative requires a ranked-choice vote. It doesn’t work. What it does is open up our primaries to the large segment of Arizona voters who are not affiliated with the two major parties.
Given our legislature, that would only result in a top two vote-getter in the general election. I had signed the petition but had some concerns about voting yes as it did not require an RCV which I would like to see but would be more difficult to pass – for some of the reasons cited in the letter.
My yes vote recognizes the very real possibility that some general election will pit two Republicans against one R and one D right now.
My hope is that this will result in the less extreme candidate winning the general election, regardless of party.
