BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPRUD) — A Baton Rouge police officer has been charged in connection with a fatal car crash that occurred in October 2023.
Charmaine Buckley, 29, of Baton Rouge, was indicted on two counts of negligent injury and reckless operation of a vehicle by an East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury, according to court documents.
Buckley was responding to a call on Government Street at approximately 10:26 p.m. on Oct. 20, 2023, when she reportedly ran a light in her marked unit and crashed into Caleb James Chapetta’s black Chevrolet Impala. Chapetta, 38, died at the scene as a result of the crash.
Baton Rouge police said other police units were trying to make contact with armed suspects who were shooting at police near Government Street and South 16th Street when the crash happened. Police said eight other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Buckley was arrested and initially charged with negligent homicide, two counts of negligent injury, reckless operation of a vehicle and emergency vehicle: exceptions. Police said Buckley has been placed on administrative leave.
