John Gilbert, who has reflected the Star Tribune hockey for three decades, died on Wednesday. Gilbert was 82.
Gilbert, a native of Dulut, who lived in Dulut when he died, began his career in a newspaper in his hometown. He worked at The Duluth News Tribune for several years before being hired by Star Tribune in 1967.
Gilbert is the author of books for the US Olympic hockey team in 1980 and for hockey coach Herb Brooks.
It also covered car races and wrote about the automotive industry.
Gilbert’s father, Wally, is one of the best athletes in the history of the country. Wally Gilbert played five seasons in the big leagues and also played for four seasons with Dulut Eskimo of NFL.
