After the Gold Departure, Notre Dame Divided New DC – ESPN SIOUX Falls

Veteran Defense Coordinator Chris Ash accepted the work as a protective coordinator of Notre Dam, sources told ESPN on Wednesday.

The hiring is expected to be finalized by Notre Dame in the coming days, sources told ESPN.

Ash was an attractive choice for his experience – he spent 24 years as a college coach. This will mark his fifth stay as a coordinator at a school for a power conference and he has a recent experience at NFL.

He had high -end results in his college coordinator. Ash was a coordinator of the National Ohio State Title in 2014, coordinating the protection of two Big Ten title teams in Wisconsin and works as a protective coordinator in Arkansas (2013) and Texas (2020).

He will replace Defense Coordinator Al Golden, who helped Notre Dam reach the national title game this season before returning to Cincinnati Bengals as a defense coordinator.

Notre Dame returns a strong core of protective players, including the linear player Drake Bowen, the safety Adon Shuler and the defender at the corner of Leonard Moore.

Ash is the coach of four Top 25 Defenses in his career and has helped develop players like Joey Bosa, March Latimore and Denzel Ward in Ohio. The Buckeyes 2015 defense has completed No. 2 at national level. In both seasons as a protective coordinator of Wisconsin, Badgers finished the top 15 in defense.

He also brings the prospect of a coach of the chief coach of his time in Rutgers and NFL – a similar profile of Golden’s experience in Miami and Temple and in NFL, before spending three years as a protective coordinator of Notre Dam. Ash worked as a head coach in Rutgers from 2016 to 2019. After spending the 2020 season in Texas, he spent the last four seasons in various roles in NFL.

He spent 2021 with Jaguars Jacksonville and the 2022 and 2023 seasons with Raiders (Beck’s defense trainer) before returning to Jaguars in the role of staff last year. Ash brings extensive experience in the Midwest as he worked in Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa and Drake.

Ash will join experienced staff who was a force with coach Marcus Freeman, who came to Notre Dame as a protected coordinator before being erected. It includes the coordinator of the coach/launch of the linear coach Al Washington, the coordinator of the coach/defensive back/pass Mike Mycens and the coach of the line players Max Bulu. Special team coach Marty Biagi works as an assistant granting coach.
