The Sioux Falls legislator and the long -standing presence in South Dakota’s Republican Policy, Tony Venhuyzen, has been elected Governor of Lieutenant.
Born announced his choice on Wednesday morning in the Capitol in Pierre, two days after he swore as a manager. Born inherited the former governor Christie Noem, who resigned on Saturday to become secretary of the Federal Department of Homeland Security.
The nomination of Rodin for Ventureen is subject to approval by the legislature.
“Tony is a solving problem for South Dakota people,” Rodin says in a press message. “He is never ashamed to show leadership and take challenging questions.”
Rhoden is committed to a new prison and school choice in first speech as a manager
Venhuizen is a 42-year-old lawyer and a native of Armor, a small town in southeastern southern Dakota. He is also the son -in -law of the Republican former governor Denis Daugard. Venhuyzen and his wife Sarah have three school age children.
He won his bachelor’s degree in political science and history from the State University of South Dakota in 2005 and a PhD in Jurisdiction from the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law in 2008.
Venhuizen serves 10 years in the governor’s office, including the time as head of Daugaard and Noem headquarters.
Since 2023, Venhuizen has been the state representative of the district 13 and as a deputy chairman of the Committee on Budget Loans of the Chamber, which has taken a leading role in the development of the state budget. He also chaired the Committee for Planning the 100th Session of Legislative Power in 2024. He resigned in the legislative branch on Wednesday, which would allow Rodin to appoint a substitute.
Rodin confessed to Wednesday to reporters that throughout their service to and Venture in the State Government, the two did not agree on everything. Born said that finding a “honesty man” is more important than that.
“Sometimes we were not on the same country, but we always had a lot of mutual respect,” Rodin said.
Beyond his experience in the government, Venhuyzen is the president of the Board of Directors of the South Dakota Historical Society Foundation, a member of the Board of Directors of the Governor Trail Foundation and the SDSU Research Park and a former member of the Board of Board of Commerce Chamber of the Big Waterfall.
As a hobby, Venchuyzen maintains the blog of Sodak governors, where he writes about the political history of South Dakota. He also regularly updated a historical reference pointer, which he wrote: “South Dakota Governors.”
Born mentioned the historical expertise of Venizen on Wednesday.
“He may know more about the history of South Dakota than anyone I have ever met. And he uses this knowledge to help shaping where our country is directed in the future. “
Venhuizen thanks Rhoden for the opportunity to serve.
“It’s a pretty surreal feeling,” Venhuyzen said. “I’m not sure I have absorbed it completely. But I look forward to it. “
The choice adds a potential intrigue to the 2026 campaign for the governor. Rodin will endure the rest of the term of November in the same year and will have to choose whether to look for elections.
Rodin said on Wednesday that he did not decide on it.
“And I have no reason not to be honest with you,” he added.
Meanwhile, Venuzen said years ago while he was a student at SDSU that one day he wanted to be a governor, and American reporter Dusty Johnson, R-South Dakota, has long been considered a potential candidate as governor. Current Prosecutor Marty Jackli may also be interested in another governor candidate after running unsuccessfully against NOEM in the Republican Governor’s Primary First.
