Utah ranks third in number of deadly teenage crashes – KSLTV

Salt Lake City – In the last six years, Utah has been among the top 10 most dangerous countries for teenage drivers. According to a recent study, Utah is already in the top three.

The analysis was conducted by the specialists under the Law on Personal Injuries John Foy & Associates, which uses data collected from 2018 to 2022 by the National Movement Safety Administration on highways. The data determine which conditions have the highest percentage of driver deaths involving drivers in the age range of 15 to 25.

Jason Metman, the Ministry of Public Safety of Utah, said parents should guarantee that their new driving children knew the rules on the road.

“As we have been looking back over the last six years in the victims of Utah, we see that teenage drivers represent about 16% of drivers involved in victims aged 15 to 20,” Metman told KSL TV. “16% may not look like many, but these are our children there. These are new drivers that we need to make sure that parents keep their teenage drivers high. “

Metman said that car-related incidents are called catastrophes, not accidents, “Because there is always something that any driver can do to make sure they are safer.”

In 2019, according to reports, there were 225 deadly crashes. This number has increased since 2020 to 2022, according to the report. In 2024, NHTSA said its number was trending down.

NHTSA reports that 53% of fatal crashes have participated in drivers between 15 and 20 years old. The data collected show that 18 of these victims are the inhabitants of other vehicles involved in teenage crashes, while 17 of them are young drivers themselves.

“In 2024, we actually saw a rather dramatic improvement in teenage deaths,” Metman said. “It was only 7% of our total. And teenagers usually participate in about 20% of crashes across the country. But this is a dramatic improvement we are glad to see. “

Metman said that compared to teenage deaths, 2025 is already looking up.

“And since we start the year in 2025, we expect a much better way on the roads,” Metman said. “We are encouraged by the fact that we are now number 12 without death here in Utah. This is an excellent trend that we quietly celebrate here at the Ministry of Public Safety. We are glad to see that many people choose to drive better in the last 12 days, which leads to more favorable roads.
