LVMPD sergeant under investigation for Strip arrests now faces child pornography charges – KTNV 13 Action News Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department sergeant under investigation for his arrest tactics is now facing new charges of possession of child pornography.

Channel 13’s Jaewon Jung was in the courtroom where Sgt. Kevin Menon was expected to appear Wednesday morning on his arraignment on the oppression, perjury and damage charges.

The hearing was suddenly restarted after the judge confirmed that Menon could not attend due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

But Metro confirmed Menon was arrested on child pornography charges before the hearing took place. Menon now faces two counts of possession of a visual presentation depicting sexual behavior of a person under the age of 16, according to police.

Menon was previously indicted by a Clark County grand jury on charges related to abuse of police authority, including oppression, subjugating perjury and battery on a protected person. He is accused of orchestrating the arrests while working as a plainclothes police officer on the Las Vegas Strip.

Camera footage obtained by Channel 13 shows the alleged illegal arrests for which Menon is being investigated. In the videos we reviewed, several individuals expressed confusion about their arrests, including one who said he was “set up” and another who claimed he was arrested under “false pretenses.”

The Metro sergeant was scheduled to appear in court at 10 a.m. when criminal defense attorney Dominic Gentile told the court he had been arrested.

When asked about Menon’s arrest, Gentile told Channel 13 he had no comment.

Channel 13 went to Menon’s home in North Las Vegas, located near Cheyenne and Decatur. When our team arrived, more than a dozen undercover officers were on the scene.

For hours, police converged on Menon’s home and appeared to search him. Police at the scene would not confirm to Channel 13 whether a warrant was served.

Menon’s wife could also be seen picking up her dog and leaving home looking emotional.

Channel 13 has obtained the new report on the arrest of Sgt. Kevin Menon Wednesday afternoon. It said detectives served a search warrant on Aug. 30 as part of the first investigation into allegations related to the strip’s arrests when they came across sexual images of young girls on two of his devices.

Five laptops were seized and authorities were only able to retrieve data from two of them. Investigators found numerous images of girls believed to be under the age of 16 with their bodies exposed.

On one MacBook, investigators found 18 material images of child sexual abuse. Search history on the black MacBook includes search terms “teenfundies,” “pedopounder,” “teen pee,” and “teen cum target.”

They concluded that the black MacBook belonged to and was used by Menon.

The silver MacBook Air contains over 350,000 images:

  • 20 materials on sexual abuse of children
  • 27 age difficult
  • 86 child erotica

The evidence shows that Menon was the primary user of the device.
They used his mobile phone data to prove that he was at his residence at the time of accessing CSAM on the silver MacBook Air. Likewise, they were able to prove that she was not his wife because she was at work.

In a statement about Menon’s previous arrest, Metro officials said he had been employed by the LVMPD since 2014 and was assigned to the Tourist Safety Unit at the Convention Center. In May, he was placed on paid leave and his police powers were temporarily suspended while his conduct was investigated. At last check, the metro police told us that Menon is now on unpaid leave.

He is due back in court on Thursday, October 24. Jaewon Jung will continue to follow this case, so check back for updates.
