Baton Rouge, La. (WAFB) – A blind resident of Baton Rouge is safe after being rescued from a home fire by an employee to prevent a fire that was in the area.
The fire happened shortly before 10:30 on Tuesday, January 28, at a house on East Polk Street in Baton Rouge.
According to Baton Rouge Fire Service, the officer noticed smoke as he completed a fire safety check nearby and followed him to the house, just when the scene arrives at the scene.
After learning from a neighbor about a blind man inside the home, the officer forced the door to open for crews and saved the man, the officials explained.
Firefighters report a fire, which is concentrated in the kitchen in the back of the home and contained the fire in this room and ceiling. However, the rest of the home suffered smoke damage.
Fire investigators said the random fire had started in the wall behind the stove.
According to the fire department, the resident suppressed a small fire near the stove the previous night and believed that the weak odor of smoke throughout the night of the fire was residual from the worse incident.
The Red Cross connects to help the depleted resident, staff confirmed.
