Prior to the tournament of the Hundred Years Conference, SCOTUS Central Catholic Basketball teams were able to add two more wins to their season.

On Thursday, Shamrocks hosted Boone Central and Friday, they hosted Fremont Bergan, as the teams for boys and girls went 2-0 in the two days.

The Scotus boys won their 59-45 games over Boone and 64-42 against Bergan while the girls beat the Boone 48-29 and Bergan 45-16.

For the Scotus boys, the victories over Boone and Bergan were a continuation of a winning series, which is already eight games as they have improved to 13-3.

“We worked very hard to get here, we work every day, which may be our last game,” said Senior Scott Caleb Cameron. “This series was good and just the opportunity to continue to win and build confidence, it will really take us in the next step to the conference, come on the images and we hope that when we reach the state.”

On Friday, Shamrocks began strongly against the knights as they kept a 26-11 lead in half.

Scotus would close the game by exceeding Bergan 38-31 in the second half as they secured a 22-point victory.

“The defense of the first half was,” said scotus boys, Mike Vunkanon. “(Assistants Cody Mroschek and Michael Rhrucha) came out with a really good game plan and the boys filled it perfectly. This team is very talented and if you hold them at 11 points for a half, that’s great.”

Against Bergan, Shamrox coincided well with the big man of the knights like Gavin Baker, a junior with 6 feet-6 was stretched in Cameron and senior Max Wemoff in the interior.

“(Baker) had to guard Max when (Wemhof and Cameron) were in and Caleb was quite difficult to guard in the paint and he took advantage of it,” Vunkanon said. “These two make it difficult for their big man.”

Cameron eventually runs Shamrox with 19 points as he continues his strong senior campaign.

“When I score, it’s just reading for me and just the right reading is crucial for me to take the best photos,” Cameron said. “It was just a good game and I have good gaps for me.”

Against Boone Shamrox, he led 28-23 at halftime and managed to step back late as they exceeded the Cardinals 15-6 in the fourth quarter in a 14-point win.

Cameron led the charge of Boone’s 16 -point victory, while senior Cohen Pelan finished with 12 points and Max Wemhof added 11.

“We had to make a couple who plays, getting off the section against Boone,” Vunkanon said. “We had a few stops in the fourth and we were able to make a few free throws.”

Scott’s girls also leaned against a highly defensive performance against Bergan, as Shamrox kept the knights up to only nine points from the first half and eight points from the second half until Scott led 45-10 after three quarters.

“I think we put a ton of defensive, their detention at 10 points in three quarters was exceptional,” said Scott Jarrr Rider’s girls coach. “Our children have done a great job and I’m really proud of their efforts.”

With the victory, the Shamrock girls also improved to 13-3, while Doerneman continued to influence the team.

“It was so fun, it was so exciting for everyone to work hard and everyone works together,” Doerman said. “We were all there for each other and did everything for the elderly.”

Against Boone Shamrox, he led only 19-17 at half before surpassing the Cardinals 29-12 in the second half to win with 19.

The two wins came after Shamrocks lost to North Bend when a half court shot made in the Zumer.

“I think this just shows the character of our children, the loss of the way we lost is difficult and disappointing,” Rider said. “Our children came back and wanted to get better. I think we showed a lot of strength when we went out and playing how we play.”

Both Scotus teams will now be home again today, January 28, to start the Centennial Conference tournaments. Scotus girls will play the winner at Kearney Catholic and Lincoln Lutheran, and the boys will play Boys Town.
