BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Magic City Classic week is in full swing!
People from all over the country gather for the big game at historic Legion Field. With so many visitors to Birmingham, police want to make sure everyone is safe while having a good time.
Leaders report that tickets have been sold in 40 states as thousands flock to Birmingham. Staff want residents and visitors alike to know they will be working around the clock, prioritizing safety.
With over 200,000 people expected to enter the city, Birmingham police have been preparing for this week for quite some time. They plan to work with other agencies to keep everyone safe.
“The Birmingham Police Department will have a strong presence. We will be working with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office as well as other local law enforcement agencies,” said Birmingham Police Sgt. Laquita Wade.
Wade advises that preparations begin on Saturday as there will be road closures.
“Graymont Avenue will be closed at approximately 8am and access will only be allowed to those with credentials. Additionally, 8th Avenue will be blocked from Arkadelphia to Center Street, with no access after 8 a.m. Saturday,” explains Wade.
Many employees will be working throughout the week supporting events such as the Mayor’s Green Carpet event on Wednesday and the concert on Thursday at Railroad Park. However, Sgt. Wade assures the public that they are fully prepared.
“Events are happening all week. We are extremely busy, but we want everyone to know that the Birmingham Police Department is committed to the Magic City Classic and making sure everyone feels safe,” says Wade.
