When the D-Backs signed the tallest starting pitcher Corbin Burns up to a six-year contract of $ 210 million on December 30, much of the baseball world was stunned.
Burns, the CY Young 2021 award winner, was sure he was attracting attention from the perennial contenders surrounding the Major League baseball.
At his opening press conference on January 15, Burns said joining D-Backs was something he and his wife hoped to happen.
The ability to be home with his family throughout the year was a major factor in his decision to sign with the team.
“As the twins were born in June, the son is preparing to turn 3 (s) just the kind of the stage of life we are so that I can spend the most time with them that I can be crucial,” Burns said. “To wake up and take my son to school here in a few years is much better than to have to say on the way in the morning,” Have a nice day at school. “
The 30-year-old and his wife Brooke moved to Phoenix in 2018 when he was a member of the Milwaukee brewers. The family lives in Scottsdale.
Last season, Burns Scott Boras’s lawyer acknowledged how important the family is for the young superstar. He told how one night in June Burns headed for Baltimore Oriols and then climbed a private flight to Phoenix so that he could be on his wife’s side for the delivery of his twin daughters.
Jet had problems, so Burns was grounded and called Boras at 2:30 in the morning to help him get him to the Phoenix he did.
Knowing how much it would mean to burn him to be close to the home, Boras called D-Backs General Ken Kendrick at the end of December to ask the team’s interest in making Burnes.

Kendrick said this move was not in the organization’s plans when he enters the out -of -season period, but Boras and Burns are the catalysts to ignite it.
“We learned that there was some interest from Corbin and his representatives, and that inspired us and we started talking and we realized that there was probably a model to work,” Kendrick said. “And we moved quite aggressively through a few days of discussion to get to the target. But when the extra -season started, it was not part of the business model. “
Kendrick is ready to spend more than he has ever had in the last two seasons. He admits that the Arizona sports fans are responsible for winning teams, and this move emphasizes the organization’s commitment to make a winning list.
“Our fans in this community support winning teams,” Kendrick said. “They do not necessarily act here, and maybe the fans of Chicago Cubs, without disrespect for them, but they support their team, no matter what I think.”

Mike Hazen, an executive vice president and general manager, said that the opportunity to sign high -end primary steels like Burnes is not always there and this move will help the team insist on success after the season.

Burns will be the # 1 starter in the rotation, but he stressed that everyone needed to be successful.
“I personally do not look at myself as ( # 1 starter),” Burnes said. “For me, I am a person part of 13 staff farmers trying to win baseball games. I will take the main weight to number one and continue and face the best guys in the game. But for me I will go out there and do what I can to be part of this group and win baseball games. “
