Lady Chaps and rival WT square off in annual shooting range rivalry – LCU Athletics

Lubbock, Texas (Oct. 22, 2024) – Lubbock Christian University hosts West Texas A&M on Wednesday at the LCU Soccer and Track Complex as the teams renew their rivalry on the track. The Lady Chaps are coming off a thrilling 3-2 home win over Texas A&M Int’l on Saturday and will look to continue their pursuit of a postseason appearance.

Lubbock Christian enters the game with a record of 6-5-2 and 4-3-1 in Lone Star Conference games, which places them in fourth place in the conference standings. In their last game, the Lady Chaps emerged victorious in a thrilling 3-2 contest against Texas A&M Int’l, snapping a two-game losing streak.

The Lady Buffs hold a 6-6 overall record and are 3-4 in conference action coming into Wednesday’s game. West Texas A&M fell to No. 11 Dallas Baptist 6-0 in Dallas on Saturday. Prior to that result, they had won two straight conference games, both in Canyon. Also, the Buffaloes have not won on the road since their conference opener against Eastern New Mexico on September 25th.

Lubbock Christian and West Texas A&M are longtime rivals, creating a title for each time the schools face off, Rivalry on the Range. During the continuation of the women’s soccer rivalry, there were a total of six meetings between the Lady Chaps and the Lady Buffs. West Texas A&M holds a slight 3-2-1 advantage while Lubbock Christian won the last game, a 1-0 win in Canyon on Oct. 11, 2023.

The Lady Chaps offense continues to be led by two standouts, Avery Jennings and Come on Spiller. Both rank in the top 10 in scoring in the Lone Star Conference, each with 13 points on the season. Jennings holds the lead in goals with five, while Spiller leads in assists with five. The support of the tandem is Journey Curswhose balanced three goals and assists rank her third on the team in points (9). The Lady Chaps showed depth among their goaltenders, with all three of their current goaltenders recording starts on the season. Megan Mirabal got the nod in their last game and she recorded three saves. In addition Cara Murray is the most common starter, starting four of the last five games for LCU and has the highest save percentage on the team (80%).

West Texas A&M is led by two of the best offensive players statistically in the Lone Star, Avery Putnam and Madison Stokes. Putnam is tied for seventh in goals in the conference with six on the season. Stokes also ranks eighth on Lone Star in points with five goals and three assists. In front of the net, the Lady Buffs are led by Reagan Heelan, who ranks 10th in the conference in goals against average with a 2.00 ERA. She also ranks 10th in saves with 55 on the season and holds a 69.6% save percentage.

Lubbock Christian and West Texas A&M will resume Rivalry on the Range when they have first contact at 5:00 pm from the LCU Soccer and Track Complex. In addition, Lubbock Christian will celebrate Staff Appreciation Night. FloSports will carry the game online and can be viewed at lcuchaps.com/live.
