Wilmington, NC (WWAY) – Wilmington Fire Service celebrates the 30th anniversary of a special unit.
The Regional Response Team 2 is a specialized unit that corresponds to any calls involving the release of dangerous materials.
It was formed in 1995.
“RRT” 2 covers several counties here in Cape Fear and this is one of the seven teams that covers the whole country.
The team recently spent time in West North Carolina, helping to clean up after hurricane Helen.
Fire chief Steve Mason said he was excited to see what the future had for the unit.
“So I would hope that with the emerging drone technologies and many other techniques for softening or changes in the sample or air monitoring, that we would be able to keep up with the equipment needed to continue to provide these services, but let it Do at high levels, ”Mason said.
Wilmington first created a unit for dangerous materials in the 1980s, making it one of the first such departments in the country that have such a unit.
