Birmingham hoops star Jaelyn Sherrod to be honored after WNBA championship win – WBRC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A Birmingham basketball legend is being celebrated for reaching the top of women’s basketball.

Ramsay High School graduate Jaylyn Sherrod, fresh off a WNBA championship season with the New York Liberty, will be honored in her hometown next week.

Sherrod, who played a key role in Liberty’s success, will be recognized at Ramsay High School, where the gym will host an event called “Jay Day” next Tuesday, Oct. 29. Her jersey will be officially retired as part of the celebration.

In an interview, Sherrod shared how her life has changed over the past four months and winning the WNBA title. The road to victory was not without challenges.

After going undrafted after the March Madness tournament, where he faced off against fellow rookie Caitlin Clark, Sherrod still managed to secure a spot on the Liberty’s training camp roster. However, she was cut after camp and did not join the team until midseason.

Despite these setbacks, Sherrod has made the most of his opportunities since returning to the court. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasized the importance of staying present and focused.

“Just be where your feet are and be in the moment with what you’re doing because the opportunity to win a championship wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t do what I did in training camp or if I didn’t do it and even though I was cut, it carried over that they thought enough of me to come back and get me in the middle of the season. So just really being where my feet are at the moment and taking advantage of the opportunity,” Sherrod said.

A Jay Day ceremony will be held at Ramsay High School next Tuesday, where the community will come together to honor her incredible journey.
