Fourth Crash at the Birmingham Railway Bridge for one month – bbc.com

The Birmingham Railway Bridge has been hit by vehicles four times in just one month, causing a train break.

In the first week of January, three different trucks crashed into a bridge of Summer Road in Erdington, with two of the trucks crashed into the bridge the same day.

On Monday, the West Midlands railway said another vehicle was confronted with the same bridge.

This blocks the line between Birmingham New Street and Lichfield Trenty for several hours, with the delays continuing after the line opened again.

After the bridge was struck by three trucks for less than a week earlier this month, once on January 3 and twice on January 7, Network Rail called on the cabinets to “reasonable, size” to avoid such incidents in Future.

This includes knowing the height of vehicles, properly planning routes and not reading SAT-NAV or applications to be up-to-date for bridges and height limitations.

Martin Colmi, Operations Director of Network Rail’s central route, said: “There is no excuse for expulsion of a truck in a railway bridge.

“Our bridges are clearly marked, and cabinets drivers should always know the height limitations of their vehicles.

“To ignore both, and to overcome the bridge, causing the interruption of passengers and road users is unforgivable.

“We look at what this recent number of bridge bashi may have caused, but I pleaded all drivers to know their vehicle limitations and if they doubt if they can fit under a bridge to always use an alternative route.”
