The Birmingham Police Department reports that detectives have obtained an arrest warrant in connection with the murder of Jaquavius ​​James Weston. He was shot and killed Wednesday, May 15, 2024in the 2400 block of Avenue W.

The suspect has been identified as:

Cameron Jayveon Scales, (18), B/M, of Bessemer, Alabama.

Birmingham police detectives provided information on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After evaluating the information, detectives obtained a warrant for Murder.

On Wednesday, October 23, 2024, Cameron Scales was taken into custody in the 1000 block of Huckleberry Lane, Hoover, Alabama. by the Birmingham Police Department’s Special Enforcement Unit with the assistance of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Cameron Scales is being held at the Jefferson County Jail No bonds.

Investigating murders

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 15, 2024.

The victim has been identified as:

Jaquavius ​​James Weston, (18), B/M, of Birmingham, AL.

At approximately 11:23 p.m., West Precinct officers responded to two separate ShotSpotter calls. One report recorded approximately eighteen shots fired and the other reported six more shots fired in the 2400 Block of Avenue W, Ensley Highlands.

When officers arrived at the scene, they encountered two residents who said they had just arrived home and had not heard or seen anything unusual. Officers inspected the area and did not notice anything unusual at the time.

At approximately 11:53 p.m., officers returned to the scene for a call about a person shot.

When officers arrived on scene, they observed the victim approximately fifteen feet down in a ditch lying inert, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and pronounced the victim dead.

Preliminary reports indicate that the victim was outside the residence and engaged in a verbal altercation over the phone with a stranger. Unknown vehicle
approached the victim and shots were fired fatally wounding the victim.

There is no one in custody.
