PETE CANTY, North Carolina — A Durham man previously arrested on murder and attempted murder charges is now facing new charges, according to the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office.
Melvin Vines, 66, was taken into custody Oct. 5 after deputies responded to a reported shooting at a home on Latham Road in Bethel. Arriving officers found 25-year-old Elijah Everett, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities also say 47-year-old Thomas Everett Jr. was also shot but not injured.
Further investigation indicated that a third victim, Leketa Alexander, 45, of Princeville, was at the crime scene at the time of the murder.
Detectives say Vines was additionally charged with attempted murder, shooting into an inhabited dwelling, assault with a firearm and uttering threats on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
He remains jailed at the Pitt County Detention Center on a $4 million bond.
