The snow blanket covered the Rino area on Saturday night and the city’s park and recreation department decided that there was no better time to take the slippery slopes of Huffaker Park.
“We turned a little and offered a sled descent because of this wonderful time,” said Kayla Snow, coordinator of Rino’s Recreation Program. “Personally, I can’t see a person without a smile today.”
Sunday celebrated the first of 12 Rino’s meetings for the Junior Rangers for 2025. The introductory series offers local children of all ages the chance to contact nature and learn new skills in various parks in the city.
After a brief introduction to the program and a little hot chocolate, part of the group headed for the initially planned interpretive hike, while children like Austin and Julian returned to the sledding hills.
“There is this huge ramp we move on, it’s great and moving very fast,” Austin said.
These two, along with all the other children at the event on Sunday, gathered their first junior ranger sticker and if they receive five more events during the year, they will receive a junior ranger badge.
“The idea of children here who are actively resting, and just the community that is being built is all that is Reno Parks and Recreation.”
The next Junior Ranger Program event will be in Mira Loma Park on February 8th and will dedicate the topic of bicycle safety. For the full list of events, visit the website of Rino.
