‘Making dreams come true’: Special Olympics basketball tournament promotes inclusion – WWBT

New Kent, Washington (WWII) Several communities came together to participate in New Kent’s annual special basketball tournament.

Special Olympics fosters an environment of inclusion, unity, tolerance and acceptance.

Saturday, January 26, more than 200 players played ball at New Kent High School.

The tournament featured players from all over, including Goochland, Richmond, Hampton Roads and New Kent.

“You shouldn’t give up on your dreams. Special Olympics is what makes your dream come true,” said Special Olympics basketball player Nyelly Rivera.

The Nyelly River is from the Chesapeake.

“It’s important for them to come out and be able to play and get recognition for their game and feel like they’re part of the community and be able to play sports,” said Six Olympics Special Coordinator Peggy Ramon.

The annual tournament is sponsored by local businesses and organizations, allowing players to play at no cost to them.

“It’s 19 years later that I’m playing and officiating at these games and it’s been one of the best things I’ve ever done. It warms my heart and I love to see these people be able to participate and when they have some kind of illness, we just help lift them up,” said Special Olympics referee Donald Pace.

Pace says this is a special opportunity for him because he played basketball when he was in school, so it’s only right to give everyone a chance, no matter what their problem.

“The Special Olympics, we’re the perfect organization where we won’t tolerate any bullying and we’re a movement family and that’s the facts,” said Special Olympics basketball player Eric Nelson.
