A Winston-Salem police officer was injured Sunday morning after their car rolled over during a police chase.
The police pursuit came as a result of a call about a “mental health violence crisis in the 4200 block of Old Lexington Road.”
Officers responded to the home of a cognitively impaired individual who was accused of assaulting a family member. Police did not identify the individual, but said police had previous experience with the man.
While police were en route, the man stole a vehicle from the home and began driving erratically, plowing through yards and cutting into oncoming traffic, according to police.
Officers pursued the vehicle, ending the pursuit in a nearby parking lot. The individual was then taken into custody by officers after attempting to flee on foot, according to police.
During the pursuit, one of the Winston-Salem police vehicles overturned after crashing with another vehicle.
“The officer suffered minor injuries but is expected to recover,” according to police.
The person who ran from police was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation. Police said they expect to file charges as the investigation continues.
