Emergency crews rushed to Birmingham Airport at around 1pm this afternoon following reports of a “suspicious vehicle” near the hub.
Passengers were advised by the airport not to visit the site during the incident and all airport operations were suspended while emergency services crews attended the scene.
During the incident, explosive ordnance disposal teams examined the vehicle before later marking it as safe.
Airport restrictions have now been lifted, with a spokesman for Birmingham Airport (BHX) saying operations will return to normal throughout the day.
A spokesman for Birmingham Airport said: “Following a police investigation, some passengers were evacuated and we had to suspend departing flights for several hours. This investigation has now been completed and operations will slowly return to normal. All passengers are advised to check the latest flight information from their airline.
“While we apologize for the inconvenience and disruption, the safety and security of everyone at the airport was our number one priority as we worked through this incident with law enforcement partners.”
Only one flight was canceled as a result of the incident, with a spokesman for Birmingham Airport saying “the majority of flights that were held on the ground have now departed”.
The spokesman said: “Birmingham Airport is working closely with its airline partners to minimize any potential disruption to customers.
“Most of the flights that were on the ground have already taken off, with only one flight cancelled.
“Customers are still advised to check the status of their flight with their airline.
“Again, we apologize for the inconvenience to our passengers, but their safety and security is our priority.”
