Saturday made for some exciting basketball.
In a Southwestern Athletic Conference doubleheader, Florida A&M and Alcorn State split their meetings at the Davey L. Whitney Complex in Norman, Mississippi.
FAMU women’s basketball (6-12, 3-4 in SWAC) lost to the Lady Braves 75-72 in overtime. The Rattlers forced overtime with a fourth-quarter buzzer-beater by guard D’Mai Griffin.
Famu guard Sabou Gueye filled the article with 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals. Rattlers center Zikeyah Carter contributed a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and also chipped in with two steals and a block.
In all, FAMU had five players in double figures: Gueye, Carter, Cheyenne McEvans (14 points), Griffin (12 points) and IVET Subirats (11 points).
As for FAMU men’s basketball (6-11, 3-3 in the SWAC), it erased a 12-point halftime deficit to beat Alcorn State 65-64.
Hot shooting from the Famu guard duo of Sterling Young and Milton Matthews led the Rattlers to the comeback. Young scored 19 points and drained five 3-pointers, while Matthews had 16 points and four 3-pointers.
Rattlers forward Jamine Charles had 10 points and seven rebounds, while Roderick Coffee III added seven points and 10 rebounds.
When is Famu basketball playing again?
FAMU men’s basketball will conclude its tour of Mississippi on Monday when it plays SWAC play at Jackson State (5-14, 5-1 in SWAC). Tipoff is at 8pm on the JSU Sports Network and SIPP FM.
The Rattlers are looking to beat the Tigers for their third straight win.
FAMU women’s basketball hosts SWAC opponent Alabama State (5-13, 3-3 in SWAC) on Thursday at the Al Lawson Center at 6:30 p.m. Fans can watch this game on the Rattlers mobile app.
The Rattlers aim to end a two-game home slide against the Hornets.
