Dec. 15-Diego Leyva, a 16-year-old boy accused of fatally shooting four family members early Saturday morning at a Belen residence, faces four counts of first-degree murder and was arrested and booked into a juvenile detention center in the Juvenile Detention Center in Albuquerque Detention Center.

New Mexico State Police spokesman Ray Wilson first announced the incident late Saturday. In an update Sunday night, Wilson provided more details and identified the four victims in the case as Leonardo Leyva, 42; Adriana Bencomo, 35; Adrian Leyva, 16; and Alexander Leyva, 14.

The Valencia County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from Diego Leyva around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Wilson said in a news release, claiming the teenager reported killing his family. Although Leyva was “extremely intoxicated,” Wilson wrote, he was taken into custody without incident.

When deputies searched the residence, on Camino Escondido in Belen, they found the four victims dead from suspected gunshot wounds and a gun on the kitchen table.

Leyva was taken to an area hospital for detoxification. After being medically released, Wilson wrote, he was booked into the Juvenile Detention Center around 1 p.m. Sunday.

The incident remains “in the preliminary stages of investigation,” Wilson wrote, as state police and the crime scene team collect evidence and conduct interviews.

“Once the investigation is complete, it will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office for prosecution,” Wilson wrote.
