BURLINGTON, VA – Vermonters should brace themselves for a week of extreme weather, including strong winds, sleet and freezing temperatures. Travelers on I-89 and surrounding freeways are advised to use caution as conditions can deteriorate quickly.

Wind gusts of up to 30 mph are expected in Burlington on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Monday will bring increasing clouds and breezy conditions, with gusts potentially reaching 38 mph. Light snow may begin overnight into early Tuesday, with local accumulations possible.

Tuesday’s forecast shows a chance of snowstorms and high winds, especially in the St. Lawrence Valley. Temperatures will drop sharply, and during the day the maximum will only reach the teens. By Wednesday, widespread light snow is likely to cause slick roads, especially during the morning commute.

Thursday could mark the coldest day of the season, with highs in the single digits and wind chills below zero. Officials recommend checking heating systems and dressing in layers to prevent frostbite.

Residents are urged to monitor updated forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel, especially during periods of high wind or snow. Anyone planning outdoor activities should prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
