Brian Koberger’s murder trial in the fatal deaths of four University of Idaho students has been moved to Boise, the Idaho Supreme Court ruled Thursday.
The court’s order states that all proceedings in the case have been moved from Latah County, where Moscow, Idaho is located, to Ada County, which includes the state capital of Boise. District Judge Steven Hipple has been assigned to the trial, the filing states, and Kochberger is to be transferred to the custody of the Ada County Sheriff’s Office.
Idaho Second Circuit Judge John S. a judge Filed September 9th Saying he was concerned about Kochberger’s ability to get a fair trial at the Latakh District Courthouse in Moscow, where the university is located. Four college students—Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodel, Madison Mogen and Kylie Goncalves—were fatally stabbed in a rental house near the campus, and their deaths and Kohberger’s subsequent arrest shook the tight-knit small-town community.
Kochberger’s defense team said the media coverage that followed the murders was inflammatory and left Latah County residents heavily biased against their client. A company hired by the defense team surveyed the community and found that 98% of those surveyed said they recognized the incident, and 70% of that group said they had already formed the opinion that Kochberger was guilty.
The judge also noted in the filing that Latah’s courthouse was not large enough to handle the case, given the extensive media coverage and interest, and that the county sheriff’s office did not have enough deputies to handle security.
Goncalves’ family expressed helplessness at the courthouse’s impending move. On Monday, the family issued a statement saying they were “incredibly disappointed” at the change of venue.
