WILMINGTON, NC – Five UNCW players reached double figures and the Seahawks shot 50 percent or better for the third straight game en route to an 83-62 men’s basketball victory against Hampton on Saturday night at a sold-out Trask Coliseum.
The Seahawks snapped their four-game winning streak and have won 13 of their last 16 contests to stand at 16-5 and 6-2 in the Coastal Athletic Association. The Pirates fell to 10-11 and 3-6 in the league.
UNCW shot 56.9 percent (29-of-51) from the field, the highest mark against a Division I school this season, and a season-high 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from three-point range.
Khamari McGriff’s 19 points was the game high, followed by Harlan Obioha with 14 points. Noah Ross added 12 s Donovan Newby provision of 11. Alchen Williams dished out 10 along with a season-high seven assists to round out the top five.
Hampton’s Noah Farrakhan scored 15 points for the Pirates, who shot 41.7 percent from the field. Daniel Johnson scored 10 points.
With the game tied at 15-all, UNCW raced to a double-digit lead it would not relinquish with a 13-2 run to make it 28-17 with 5:44 left in the half and led 39-28 at halftime.
The Seahawks extended their lead to a game-high 17 points with 8:24 remaining, followed by seven unanswered Pirate points to make it 67-57 with 6:10 left. UNCW’s defense forced turnovers on 10 of Hampton’s final 11 attempts to seal the win.
UNCW next travels to play at North Carolina A&T on Thursday at 7 p.m
