The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are on the coaching merry-go-round this offseason as they lost their offensive coordinator to an opposing head coach entering a second straight season.
While the Buccaneers originally thought they would bring back Liam Cohen and make him one of the highest paid assistant coaches in the NFL – now he is the next head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is the biggest gainer in the situation, and Buccaneers star signal caller Baker Mayfield was the biggest loser.
Still, losing Cohen is a huge blow to the organization, which will need to hire another coordinator. The current Jaguars coach comes from the Sean McVay coaching tree, having previously spent time with the Los Angeles Rams.
Of course, McVay made a statement regarding another former assistant taking on an important role as an NFL head coach.
“I was talking to Liam Cohen the other day and one of the coolest things that I think reflected in what a great job he’s done was when you look at them and what they’ve come to with Bucky Irving and the way they’ve run the football, and some of the diversity and groups of staff,” McVeigh said. “I think it was a great reflection of, ‘Hey, I think we’re going to do it.'”
The Buccaneers might have been better off replacing Todd Bowles with Cohen as the club’s head coach, but losing the coach to the Jaguars in any capacity is a huge blow. Tampa Bay may need a new head coach in the future if Bowles can’t get the team over the hump.
Tampa Bay really created a ground game that helped open up the offense for Mayfield to put together another absurd season in which he tied career highs in passing touchdowns along with passing yards.
Cohen will bring that offensive versatility to Jacksonville as the Buccaneers replace his role.
