Las Vegas (KSNV) – In partnership with Nevada Plants, the city of North Las Vegas hosted a tree giveaway Saturday as part of its commitment to community health and wellness.
The event aims to address urban heat island effects and food insecurity by distributing 100 desert-adapted fruits and shade trees to residents.
The initiative is part of the Urban City Canopy Program, which seeks to improve green spaces by planting and distributing trees across the city.
Lisa Ortega is the executive director of Nevada Plants. She says, “We know about the urban heat island. We know about the food desert, and trees aren’t the only answer, but it’s definitely an answer in residential areas, and we can start to get some shade.”
Trees were available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
The US Forest Service and NDF IRA Funds provided funding for the tree giveaway, both being equal opportunity providers.
