Why did Lumon cut ties with Dylan’s Irving and Utes but hang on to Mark? What sinister game is the company playing? Severance Season 2, Episode 2 throws fans into a web of deceit, power play and chilling corporate control.
Let’s unravel the truth behind Lumon’s calculated solutions – and what they mean.
Why Lumon Fire Irving and Dylan’s Outies?
While Mark was mysteriously saved, both Irving and Dylan found themselves fired—at least for a while. This decision was no accident, but rather a calculated move by Lumon to cover up the emergency activation that rocked the company at the end of Season 1 (let’s not forget – he’s smart when he needs to be).
After Milczyk closed the emergency, he was tasked with damage control. His first move was to visit Irving, Mark and Dylan’s The Oties to assess the situation. Since Dylan’s Innie never really interacted with anyone outside of Lumon, it was easy to make a reason for his termination.
Dylan’s Oath had no knowledge of extreme overtime, making him the perfect scapegoat. Likewise, Irving’s Outie had limited awareness of what his Innie did during activation, making it convenient for Lumon to remove him without raising suspicion.
The company could easily spin a narrative that justified their termination while keeping the truth buried, and since no specific vetting processes would follow, it was easy to send the word that way.
Why did Mark run away from Lumon’s revenge?
Mark’s situation was very different from his colleagues. Unlike Dylan and Irving, Mark’s Innie had woken up in the middle of a social gathering – his sister Devon’s party. This dramatically complicates things for Lumon.
Unlike Dylan and Irving, whose outside significant others were largely in the dark, Mark Inney had shared critical details about Lumon’s cut floor with Devon and her husband Ricken.
When Milczyk visited Mark in Season 2, Episode 2, it was clear that he couldn’t use the same strategy he used with Irving and Dylan. Firing Mark under false pretenses was not going to work as his outsider already had too much knowledge of what had happened.
Instead, Milchick took a more direct approach. He acknowledged that the emergency had been activated and tried to gauge how much information was being transmitted to Devon.
Realizing that Mark’s Outie would not be easily manipulated, Milczyk decided not to fire him outright, fearing that this would only draw more attention to Lumon’s questionable practices.
What is Project Cold Harbor and why does Lumon need Mark?
Beyond the practical reasons for keeping Mark hired, a separate Season 2 hinted at a deeper, more sinister motive – Project Cold Harbour. While the specifics of this project remain a mystery, its significance was subtly teased in the opening episodes of the season.
When Mark was seen working in the Macrodata refinery, his screen briefly flashed an image of his presumed dead wife, Gemma, aka Mrs. Casey. This cryptic moment suggested that Mark’s work was somehow related to her, making him an indispensable asset to Lumon.
Heli’s Helena Egan even specifically stated that Mark was needed to complete his work on Cold Harbor. This revelation suggests that Lumon’s decision to keep Mark wasn’t just about containing the fallout from the Emergency – it was about something much bigger.
The company’s reluctance to release it suggests that any cold port can’t be complete without it – it’s essential.
What does this mean for Mark moving forward?
Mark’s continued work at Lumont places him in an increasingly precarious position. Unlike Dylan and Irving, who were sidelined to protect corporate secrets, Mark remains enmeshed in Lumon’s machinations.
With Project Cold Harbor looming over him and his personal relationship with Ms. Casey still unresolved, Mark’s journey in Season 2 promises to be darker and more complicated than ever.
The last word
Severance has masterfully crafted a corporate dystopia where every decision has chilling consequences.
As the mystery of Cold Harbor unfolds, it’s clear that Mark’s role in Lumon’s plans is far from over—whether he likes it or not.
