Trump sentenced to unconditional release in money laundering case
Donald Trump won’t get jail time or probation, but he has become the first former president to be convicted of a felony.
This story has been updated to include a response from Boone County Democrats.
One of Kentucky’s newest state lawmakers wants to name a stretch of highway in Boone County after President-elect Donald Trump.
Rep. TJ Roberts, who began his first term representing Kentucky’s 66th District on Jan. 1, is asking his colleagues to designate nearly 12 miles of Kentucky Route 18, also known as Burlington Pike, as the Donald J. Highway. Trump.
The “small gesture” will allow Boone County residents to recognize Trump’s accomplishments and values, Roberts said.
“I’m going to try to get this in committee as soon as possible,” he told The Enquirer.
Trump would share the highway name with Dr. Poore
If the Kentucky General Assembly passes Roberts’ resolution, about 12 miles of Route 18 that runs from Florence to Rabbit Hash in Boone will be known as the Trump Highway. He would share naming rights with the late Northern Kentucky physician Floyd Poore, former secretary of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and father of Kim Poore Moser, who represents the 64th Kentucky House District. Mile 11.8 to Mile 14.6 became the Dr. Floyd G. Memorial Highway. Pur in 2022
Roberts cited a long list of Trump’s actions in his resolution. Among them are Trump’s opposition to human trafficking and “excessive foreign aid,” as well as his support for the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan and the move of the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.
“For his past accomplishments and all the things he will do for our country over the next four years, President Trump is worthy of tangible recognition from the Commonwealth of Kentucky,” his resolution said.
Roberts, a Republican, said he supported Trump in the 2024 election by recruiting volunteers in Pennsylvania. In 2016 he knocked on voters’ doors as a member of Students for Rand Paul.
At 26, Roberts became one of the youngest members of the Kentucky Assembly when he was elected with 70.5 percent of the vote on Nov. 5, defeating Democrat Peggy Houston-Nieber.
He has put his name to 19 pieces of legislation since taking office as a sponsor or co-sponsor, according to his page on social media site X.
The Boone County Democratic Party is not a fan of Trump’s Roberts Expressway idea.
“While we respect the office of the presidency, we believe it is inappropriate to name public infrastructure after a living person, especially when there are countless unsung heroes in our own community who have made lasting contributions to our society,” party officials said in a statement.
“We urge our elected officials to prioritize pressing issues that directly affect the lives of our residents,” the statement added.
Trump’s name marks at least three other roads
If part of Burlington Pike becomes the Trump Highway, it will join at least three other roads named after the 45th and soon to be 47th president:
- Kalispell, Montana, population 24,000, has Trump Drive.
- About 20 miles of US Route 287 in Oklahoma, running from Boise City to the Texas border, was named after Trump in 2021.
- The City of Hialeah, Florida renamed Palm Avenue President Donald J. Trump Avenue in November 2023.
Dozens of hotels, casinos, golf courses and hotels also bear the Trump name.
