ShineMaker House, USA

A series of undulating tectonic structures set against an aspen grove near Wilson, Wyoming, ShineMaker is a mountain home that serves as a creative retreat for a California-based couple. The 35-acre property is located in the foothills of the Tetons and encompasses several ecosystems, with old-growth forests blending into stands of young pine and aspen trees before transitioning to rolling meadows. The homeowners, writers who also own and operate an independent record label out of Mill Valley, California, were looking for a nature-oriented outpost in Wyoming to continue their writing practice.

Comprised of three buildings (main house, guesthouse and writer’s studio), the home is arranged as a set of simple box-like volumes, each designed in response to its specific location. The 6,000-square-foot main house was conceived as a geological remnant in the landscape, situated on the edge between field and forest. The 1,577-square-foot guest house and 580-square-foot writer’s studio are nestled more intimately in a wooded setting. A fourth, spiritually focused structure has yet to be built and will be located further south. The architecture is open, with amazing views of the mountain views of the Grand Tetons, natural fauna, forests and meadows.

With a rectilinear plan, the main house seems to grasp the surrounding trees like anchors, sinking in the center and rising up towards the sky at the corners. Working in sync with the landscape, this dynamic quality continues through the charred exterior of the shou sugi ban building, pulled and carved to create overhangs and openings. The home’s entrance is located where the structure extends over a low-lying creek, the connection revealed by a moment of transparency in the floor. The wooden exterior wraps around the interior as light Atlantic cedar, which then dissolves into fine stucco and floor-to-ceiling glass.

Every window frames a view of the prairie and the Teton Range beyond. An east-facing fireplace provides a counterpoint to the views, and an intimate courtyard allows southern light to penetrate the center of the home. In addition to a communal kitchen, living room and dining room, the home includes three bedrooms, four bathrooms, a laundry room and a spacious mud room for the client’s Irish Wolfhounds.

Wood, steel, bronze, custom poured white concrete, bleached cedar, and huge slabs of travertine and onyx define the material palette. Italian limestone is highlighted as floors in the master bath and is also highlighted for the custom tub, which is water jet cut from a single block of limestone to create a striking monolithic and sculptural design element.

This makes it the second time the interior designer has worked with the clients, the first being in their Mill Valley home. The client’s bohemian lifestyle and love of music, literature and nature were the inspiration behind the interior design.

They love comfort, layers and texture, vintage pieces and a home that’s inviting for family and friends and calm enough for their dogs. Every surface is elevated, with artisanal details such as custom-designed, tattoo-inspired bas-relief concrete on the fireplace surround, custom hand-painted wallpaper and geometric motifs carried throughout the design. The earth-toned palette – with hints of mustard, blush and deep burgundy – is peppered with collectibles, vintage finds and contemporary art.

The three-bedroom guest house is a few steps from the main house and has a similar carved entrance and rectilinear form. The writer’s studio is located just beyond and provides a formal contrast to the other structures. A two-story sentinel surrounded by young aspens, the structure includes a living space on the first floor and a studio on the second floor, where the occupant can sink into contemplation among the treetops.
