Trooper shoots 2 people who appeared ready to run him over during chase, state police say – The Advocate

A trooper shot and killed two people in an SUV that crashed during a pursuit and appeared ready to run him over, Louisiana State Police said in a news release Monday.

A state Department of Public Safety trooper was on Chippewa Street near Daisy Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Sunday when he attempted to pull over a Chevrolet Suburban for a traffic violation that led to a vehicle pursuit, the release said .

During the pursuit, the Chevrolet crashed into the officer’s marked patrol car on Brownlee Street, south of Powell Street. The SUV then began to accelerate toward the officer who was standing nearby. According to the release, the officer fired his weapon, striking two people.

Tyler Pugh, 33, of Baton Rouge, was driving the Suburban and suffered minor injuries. Another person suffered serious injuries and remained in hospital Monday afternoon, the release said. The third passenger was uninjured.

Pugh was released from the hospital and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail on outstanding warrants. Additional charges are possible as the investigation continues, the release said.

No employees were injured in the incident. In accordance with DPS policy, the employee involved has been placed on paid administrative leave, the release said.

The investigation continues.
