LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A facility in the north Las Vegas Valley is offering affordable child care options for parents facing challenges in providing care for their children.
The North Las Vegas Valley, where Ryan Shay-Brink lives, faces some of the toughest challenges accessing child care, making it difficult to find care for her two children.
“It’s almost impossible. There are a lot of restrictions and affordability is almost impossible to achieve,” she said.
According to a recent report, nearly three out of four families do not have access to licensed childcare facilities.
North Las Vegas Mayor Pamela Goins-Brown understands the challenges of finding child care firsthand as she experienced them while looking for care for her new granddaughter.
“It was difficult to find places and a place that would be the best fit for her,” Goins-Brown said.
Skyview Preschool Village is a new preschool pop-up model that hopes to pave the way for affordable childcare. The preschool serves nearly 80 students. It’s a huge relief for Shea-Brink that her children were accepted into the program.
“It was such a blessing to have the YMCA start a preschool program near us,” she said.
Shay-Brink joins about half the families at Skyview Preschool Village who pay only half the cost of tuition, roughly $6,000. Meanwhile, almost 45 percent of families have their childcare costs fully covered through community partnerships.
On Tuesday, the Skyview YMCA held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new facility, a project made possible through a public-private partnership that includes funding from Clark County. Despite a fivefold increase in the facility’s current capacity, the program is already full with a growing waiting list.
