Six mayoral races to watch on Election Day in Hampton Roads – News 3 WTKR Norfolk

Over the past few weeks, News 3 has brought you coverage of the mayoral races we’ve been following this election in the seven cities of Hampton Roads.

The cities of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Hampton all have mayoral races coming up on Tuesday. (Newport News will not elect a mayor this year.)

VIRGINIA BEACH

Virginia Beach Mayor Dyer faces 4 challengers in re-election race

The most crowded mayoral race in the seven cities of Hampton Roads this year is in the city of Virginia Beach.

Five people are running for mayor of the most populous city in the British Commonwealth.

Mayor Bobby Dyer is hoping for a third re-election.

CHESAPEAKE

Chesapeake mayoral race pits incumbent Rick West against challenger Don Carey

Mayor Rick West is running for re-election and is being challenged by City Councilman Don Carey in a race that has been contested at times.

West, who has been mayor since 2018, wants to serve again.

Don Carey hopes to defeat him. The former NFL player was elected to the city council in 2020.

NORFOLK

Norfolk Mayor Kenny Alexander is facing two challengers for re-election

Mayor Kenny Alexander is running for a third term and faces two opponents this year: businessman Tommy Leeman and pastor Giovanni Dolmo.

For the first time since 2016, Alexander is facing rivals in his bid for mayor.

PORTSMOUTH

Portsmouth voters have 3 options in the mayoral race

Voters in Portsmouth are deciding whether to re-elect Mayor Shannon Glover or choose one of his rivals, Vice Mayor Lisa Lucas-Burke or political newcomer Harold Carothers III.

Glover was elected in 2020 as mayor, so this is his first re-election to the position.

HAMPTON

Hampton’s deputy mayor is hoping to be promoted but faces a challenge from a former firefighter

With Mayor Donnie Tuck not running for re-election, two candidates are vying to succeed him.

Current Deputy Mayor Jimmy Gray is hoping for a promotion.

Former city firefighter Richelle Wallace hopes voters will choose her this time. She ran in 2020 and lost to Tuck.

SUFFOLK

How to deal with growth looms large in Suffolk’s mayoral race

Mayor Mike Duman was first elected in 2020 and is hoping for re-election this year, but faces two challengers.

One of his opponents is former Democratic state delegate Clinton Jenkins. The other opponent is David Bosselman, who is a fourth generation farmer.
