We asked Northern Echo readers on Facebook where they thought the best places for a roast dinner were in the area and there were more than 200 comments.
To help you decide where to go for your next hearty meal full of fluffy potatoes and crunchy Yorkshire puddings, we’ve picked out some of the most recommended spots.

Where to go for a Sunday roast in County Durham?
The Farmers Arms
location: South Side, Shadforth, Durham, DH6 1LL
One person sharing their favorite Sunday lunch spot said The Farmers Arms had “beautiful food and great staff”.
Someone also wrote on Tripadvisor: “Visited this lovely little pub for a Sunday lunch, staff very friendly and helpful. Sunday lunch was delicious and got thumbs up from the kids too, would definitely recommend.”
On its Facebook page, The Farmers Arms describes itself as a “traditional country pub with quirky decor”.
The copper mine
location: 26 Job’s Hill Bank, Crook, DL15 0UL
Many readers suggested the Copper Mine as the best place to bake in the area.
Also, on Google Reviews, a recent customer commented: “Just had Sunday lunch at the Copper Mine. The service was excellent, the food superb and very good value for money. Our dog was treated as well as we were and had his own beef bowl and water bowl on the house… Very friendly, lovely food, Great setting!!! We will definitely be back.”
Its Facebook page says: “The Copper Mine is a pub that has a quirky interior and aims to offer food from simple dishes to dishes that any restaurant would be proud to offer!”
At The Copper Mine, the roast of the day is served with “fresh seasonal vegetables, creamy mashed potatoes, rich gravy and Yorkshire pudding”.
A small plate costs £8.95 and a regular is priced at £10.95, according to the restaurant’s website.
The pub and the kitchen
location: Front Street North, Cassop, Durham, DH6 4RJ
At Cassop, The Pub and Kitchen is said to have “brilliant service” and “never an unhappy waiter”, according to a local who called it his favorite place for a roast dinner.
A Google review also reads: “I had lunch today, the staff were very welcoming and polite. great idea no starters on the sunday lunch menu, you enjoy the main better and room for a very nice selection of desserts. well worth the money and the journey from the Consett area.”
On its website, the country pub reveals it offers a “modern twist” and is perfect for “lovers of great country food and drink”.
He adds: “Muddy boots and paws are also welcome!”
Fox and hounds
location: 24 Teesway, Neasham, Darlington, DL2 1QP
“Fox and Hounds Neasham DL2 Outstanding carving,” wrote one reader under the Northern Echo’s Facebook post.
The Fox & Hounds website explains that it is “a traditional dog-friendly pub offering a wide range of drinks and exciting offers”.
“Relax with a refreshing pint of your favorite larger in hand and a great atmosphere.”
This recent visitor posted on Tripadvisor: “Went today for Sunday lunch after hearing only good things and oh my god it didn’t disappoint, would definitely recommend.”

Episcopal Lodge

Someone who claims Bishops Lodge has the best Sunday roast commented: “I’ve been to Toronto Lodge [Bishops Lodge] a few weeks ago and it was spot on.’
The gastropub serves “delicious food with a wide selection of wines, spirits and drafts,” according to its Facebook page.
For a ‘traditional’ Sunday dinner, you can choose from silver beef, chicken, pork belly, ‘guest roast of the week’ and roast veg.
A small plate costs £11.95 and a large is priced at £13.95, as listed on the Bishops Lodge website.
