College football peaks in December. Not because the playoffs begin, but before that, as the first selections are made for the 12-team College Football Playoff.
The best of the best will be sent around the country as they play through the bracket to reach the National Championship in Atlanta. Until then, fans can still enjoy the heart of the CFP as it heads to six bowls during the quarterfinals and semifinals. That includes the Fiesta Bowl.
Arizona will be the sight of a quarterfinal game in this season’s historic playoff race. Two will enter, but only one will thrive under the desert sun on New Year’s Eve.

2024-25 College Football Playoff format, bracket
In this year’s CFP, the top four teams will earn a bye into the quarterfinals, while seeds 5-12 will play a first-round game. The top teams will be the highest ranked conference winners.
On Dec. 8, Selection Day, the committee will allocate matchups to the 12 teams heading to the playoffs. For those headed straight to the quarterfinals, they will play in one of four bowl games: the Fiesta Bowl, the Rose Bowl, the Peach Bowl and the Sugar Bowl. Cup designations will be determined based on geographic location and a team’s historical relationship to the game.
The semifinals will be played in the Orange Bowl and the Cotton Bowl, while the national championship will be in Atlanta.
Due to the elimination-style bracket, participating teams and matchups will not be revealed until the playoffs begin and teams win their way through each round.
