Federal prosecutors have charged this week against two men accused of stealing freight from a Barrestou freight train after numerous previous deportations.

Jesus Omar Lopez Quintero, 34 years old, and Jean Alonando Enrique, 24, both described as Mexican citizens, were accused of possessing or receiving goods stolen from an interstate shipment, eliminated countries after deportation, according to the Ministry of Justice to the United States.

They were removed on January 28 after they were caught blowing up a freight train stopped in Barrestou, DOJ said in a written statement.

Prosecutors say they have been noticed by San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies as they moved away from the newly-glorified train in a truck. Attempting to withdraw them has briefly pursued them.

“After following the vehicle, law enforcement agencies turned on sirens and lights, and the white cargo van entered a oncoming movement and continued to drive before it eventually drawn from the side of the road,” the statement said.

The deputies caught Quintero as he collided as he was running, while Enrique was soon found to hide in some nearby, staff said.

A search of the van revealed 71 cases of Milwaukee instruments that were stolen from the train with an approximate value of $ 16,3,000, according to prosecutors. Another 13 cases of instruments were detected abandoned on the side of the train tracks.

Quintero had previously been deported from the United States five times between 2013 and 2024, according to DOJ. He was convicted of illegally entering the country in 2013, 2022 and 2023.

Federal officials said Enrique was deported in November 2022 and again next month.

The current prosecutor of the United States in Central District of California, Joseph McNal, has identified the defendants as part of a “transnational criminal theft organization”, which is a threat to both trading and train safety.

“Our office will aggressively pursue those who repeatedly violate our laws and will ensure that they face consequences in the criminal system,” he said.

Both Quintero and Enrique were intended to display on February 15 at the Los Angeles Federal Court.

If they are sentenced on charges, they can stand up to 22 years in the federal prison.

The theft of freight trains passing through the high desert has been a constant problem in recent months, according to the Sheriffe Department, which often supports BNSF’s own rail police in criminal investigations.
