Two Dover businesses received awards for raising military families.

The Dover and Cheesapeake Utilities Federal Credit Union, also in Dover, were awarded the Delaware Friendly Business Award in Delaware for their commitment to support military officials, veterans and their families.

The awards awarded by the Joint Military Affairs Committee (JMAC) of the State Commercial Staff of Delaware and the Chamber of Commerce of New Castle are celebrating the business that demonstrates exceptional efforts to create inclusive circles for those who have served in the Armed Forces.

“While our roots are deeply embedded in support of the military community, this award emphasizes the Credit Union’s constant effort to ensure financial stability and empowerment of members of the Office and their families,” said Deb Juel, Assistant Vice President at the Federal Credit Union of the Federal Credit Union Dover.

Dover Federal Credit Union

Founded in 1958 to serve the military community at the Dover Air Force Base, Dover Federal Credit Union (DFCU) continues its long -standing tradition of supporting members of the US service members of the National Guard and Veterans.

The Credit Union’s commitment to the military extends beyond financial services to include stable hiring initiatives.

DFCU is recruiting veterans through military fairs, partnered with the Center for Many Veterans Services and prioritized veteran rents in its retail department.

The Credit Union also offers financial literacy programs specifically adapted for veterans and their families, hosts monthly hours of financial education at Warriors, assisting Warriors. In addition, Dover Federal sponsors veteran -oriented events such as career fairs and the first state air exhibition and provides funding for local organizations such as Uso Delaware and veterans shelters.

Chesapeake utilities

Chesapeake Utilities, a leading energy supplier to Delaware, has achieved significant steps in integrating veterans into their workforce.

In 2024, the company partnered with over 130 veterans organizations, which led to the hiring of 12 veterans and bringing the total number of veterans hired by the company to 102.

“The veterans are invaluable management, teamwork and technical expertise in Chesapeake’s utility services,” said Michael Cassel, Vice President of Government and Regulatory Affairs in Cheesapeake Utilities. “This recognition reflects our dedication to promote diversity and inclusion in our company and the wider community.”

Chesapeake Utilities supports its veterans through a group of employee resources (ERG), which offers mentoring and career development, while increasing the awareness of the skills that veterans bring to the workforce. In addition to the internal support, the company participates in programs aimed at veterans, including wreaths across America, the honest flight network and trees for troops.

The company is also dedicated to assisting veterans to go into civilian career by hiring fairs, cooperation with the Joint Military Affairs Committee in Delaware and participation in the Dover Air Force Base.

Both Dover’s Federal Credit Union and Cheesapeake Utilities will be recognized as their contribution during the JMAC address on Guard on February 20.

The event will also include a briefing for the current missions, operations and staff of the Delaware National Guard.
