BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A young member of the Birmingham Police Department officially joined the force Friday afternoon.

Officers from the Birmingham Police Department, along with 33 other law enforcement agencies, welcomed 12-year-old Devarjay “DJ” Daniel as an honorary deputy chief Friday afternoon at the Birmingham Crossplex.

“What I say every day is – believe in God, be safe, be positive, be good to other people, pray for kids who have cancer and don’t be mean to people,” DJ said.

The DJ from Houston, Texas was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer at age 6 and has since undergone 13 surgeries, but always wanted to be a police officer.

To date, DJ has been sworn in by 905 law enforcement agencies worldwide, including the first in Alabama by the Birmingham Police Department.
