One man is dead and another critically wounded after they seem to have shot himself in the Enli neighborhood on Monday afternoon.

The firing exchange is thought to have begun with a home dispute between the murdered man and his girlfriend. It escalates in exchanging a third party shooting.

The shooting took place at 16:35 in the block 1500 on the 52nd street in Enli in the neighborhood of the central park.

“The officers were at the scene within seconds,” said officer Truman Fitzgerald. “We had some officers nearby.”

They arrived to find two men injured outside the house.

The Birmingham Fire Department and Rescue Service announced a man dead in place. The second wounded man, probably a minor-was taken to the UAB hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Fitzgerald said it seemed that the man who died was involved in a home dispute, probably with his girlfriend.

“From several sources, they tell us that he may have taken out a gun during this home dispute, and he and the second victim of a rifle participated in a shootout with each other,” he said.

The surviving victim was either a friend or member of the girlfriend’s family, Fitzgerald said.

Spotter for a shot is recorded at least 10 cartridges exchanged between the two men.

The detectives enchanted the neighborhood and spoke to witnesses, but Fitzgerald said it seemed that the situation was contained.

The shooting happened only one block from the busy Bessemer Road, near Central Park Chevron. There were many children in this community playing outside when the shooting broke out.

“It’s disappointing,” Fitzgerald said. “You have an internal dispute here in which someone may have chosen to remove a firearm and then shots are exchanged.”

“This has been a common topic over the last few days,” he said. “The arguments are chosen to be resolved with weapons, life is lost and people find themselves in Jefferson’s prison because of this.”

The victim is the 12th murder of Birmingham so far in 2025.

This weekend had three murders in just 24 hours.

Willie Robert Morgan, a 55-year-old from Birmingham, was shot dead to the death of an inter-state 59 out of a ramp after a muddy turn dispute shortly before 14:00 Saturday.

A 22-year-old man was shot dead by midnight in Enli, and an 18-year-old student in Birmingham city schools was killed about 20 minutes later on Saturday in North Birmingham.

There are 17 murders throughout the County of Jefferson this year, including the 12 in Birmingham.
