1 dead in Birmingham shooting identified – AOL

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The Birmingham Police Department is investigating a homicide in the 1700 block of Pearson Avenue SW.

Shortly after 6 p.m. on Wednesday, West Precinct officers responded to a report of a person shot. Upon arrival, officers found an elderly man with a non-life threatening gunshot wound. Officers then found a second victim in life-threatening condition.

Community members and staff provided life-saving treatment to the second victim. Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and both victims were transported to UAB Hospital.

The second victim, 38-year-old Melvin Anthony Burks, died from his injuries.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the deceased victim was involved in a verbal altercation with a third adult male. Shots were fired and the suspect fled the scene.

The police found a person of interest at the scene, who was then detained. The person of interest will be interviewed at BPD headquarters.
